Mason has been with SBPS since 2007, building a career rooted in service, leadership, and student success. She began as a classroom teacher and later served as principal at Longfellow Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary, and Bluffs Middle School, where she has led the school for the past eight years.

“I am truly honored for the opportunity to serve as the Executive Director of Human Resources for Scottsbluff Public Schools,” said Mason. “This role presents a unique chance to contribute to the growth and success of the entire District. I am very grateful for my experience as principal at Bluffs Middle School. It has been a pleasure to work alongside the amazing students, staff, and families during the last eight years.”

Mason received a Bachelor’s Degree in social work from the University of Wyoming, a Bachelor’s Degree in elementary education from Chadron State College, a Master’s in educational administration from Chadron State, and a K-12 superintendent specialist degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

“Jana Mason’s strong credibility among staff and peers, combined with her proven leadership at Longfellow, Roosevelt, and Bluffs Middle School, allowed her to emerge as the top choice in a competitive selection process. With 16 years of principal experience, well-established relationships with staff, and exceptional organizational insight, Jana is prepared to lead this vital function within our 560 employee organization”, stated Dr. Andrew Dick, SBPS Superintendent.

At its November meeting, the Board of Education approved the creation of the Executive Director of Human Resources position, effective for the 2026–27 school year. The role is designed to strengthen the district’s ability to recruit, develop, and retain high-quality staff, directly supporting Strategic Priority #1 of the District’s five-year strategic plan.

With the addition of this position, the District’s reorganized leadership model will expand expertise in Finance, Human Resources, Curriculum and Instruction, and Student Services, enhancing the support provided to schools. Many comparable districts across Nebraska already maintain dedicated human resources leadership, reinforcing the importance of this strategic step. The position will initially be funded through the purposeful use of grant funds and later sustained through attrition and reorganization, while maintaining a strong support for teaching and learning.

The SBPS Board of Education is slated to approve the appointment of Mason at the January Regular Meeting. The District will immediately begin the search process for the next principal of Bluffs Middle School.
