What is Family and Consumer Sciences?

  • The Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) national standards represent a shift in the field from teaching technical homemaking skills and learning isolated facts, to using content information to solve the kinds of problems which individuals and families face daily. Family and consumer science is concerned with human problems and what to do or what action to take in situations.

A strong component of FCS subject matter is the work of the family. Parenting and the understanding of human development; creating a synergistic balance among family, career, and community responsibilities; providing for wellness and good nutrition for family members; and managing family resources are all essential to the work of the family.
