SBPS Elementary Schools Awarded FFVP Grant
SBPS Elementary Schools have been awarded a Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Program (FFVP) grant from the USDA and the Nebraska State Department of Education which will allow the school to provide free fresh fruit and vegetable to students during the 2016-2017 school year.
The grant will enable Roosevelt, Lincoln Heights, Westmoor and Longfellow Elementary Schools to supplement students’ diets with snacks of fresh fruit and vegetables.
The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program started as a pilot program in 2002 in four states (25 schools each) and selected schools in one Indian Tribal Organization. In 2008, the program expanded to all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
“The health and wellness benefits of this grant are enormous,” noted Terri Allen, FFVP Coordinator “The vitamins, minerals, fiber and protective substances found in fruits and vegetables help kids grow and develop properly. We hope offering these nutritious snacks will start our students on a path of healthy eating habits that will continue throughout their lifetimes.”
