      • Hello Parents,
I just wanted to touch base with all of you and let you know that I am available if you have questions or concerns during this school closure. I will be as forthcoming as I can be with the information that I have as it becomes available.
First, there are a few places in town that are offering free lunches to students who may need them. The first is the 16th Street Empire located in Scottsbluff and the second is the Bluffs Bar and Grill located in the old Sonic building on 10th St. in Gering. The high school is also working on a Grab-and-Go lunch program during this closure.
    • March 16, 2020
      • Secondly, the E-learning programming that we have planned for this closure will NOT begin this week. I will let you know when we are ready to roll this out for your student.
The assignments through this programming are entirely online and accessible through almost any device. If, however, you do not have a device or access to the internet, there is no expectation that your student will complete them.
The assignments will not be graded and are meant to be a review only. I will also be forwarding a list of educational websites that your student may use as well during the closure.

      • Parents,
Per the NDE, all NSCAS State Standardized Assessments have been suspended for this school year. Please let your child know that they will NOT be taking the NSCAS Assessment this year. Please also let them know that this will not affect their transition to BMS and 6th grade next year. If you have any questions, please let me know! Thanks again for your patience.
        Mr. Wheeler

      • Hello,
I wanted to make you all aware that any information I have sent via Remind can also be located on my teacher web-page through the Scottsbluff Public Schools website.
You can access my personal web-page by following these directions:
Go to www.sbps.net -> Click Schools tab -> Select Longfellow -> Click Classrooms tab -> Click my name from the directory
I encourage you to check my web-page on a daily basis during the closure. It will contain ALL necessary information to help us adjust to our current situation.
Thanks again for your patience and understanding.
        Mr. Wheeler
    • March 19, 2020
      • Hello Everyone,
This will be the first of two messages today with regard to moving forward in our current situation. Please remember that this communication will also be added to my teacher web-page on the SBPS website.
Tomorrow morning I will post on Remind and my web-page the first weekly assignment document. It will be a PDF file containing hyperlinks to Nearpod Lessons in all major curricular areas. Your student must simply click on the link to open a Nearpod lesson to be completed at his/her convenience.
Please let me know if you have any questions!
    • March 19, 2020
      • Secondly, in the event that we are closed for a longer period of time than the current two week closure, I would like to set up video conferences with you and your student just to check in with them during the closure. I just want to ensure they are not going to fall behind and ask about what he/she is doing to keep up with their learning.
The conference would not last very long and we would not even begin to think about scheduling these conferences until a few weeks have passed beyond this initial closure.
If you have questions, please let me know! Thank you for your patience!
    • March 23, 2020
      • Hello Parents,
I am working on establishing a line of communication with every one of you so the communication is beneficial to all of us. With each message I send, I am able to see which of you are receiving the message, who is reading it, and those it is not reaching. However, this is not always useful in determining if everyone is on the same page with the information I am sending.
So, while this is overwhelming for all of us, I am asking that you simply respond to this announcement with a acknowledgement that you are receiving these Reminds.
As usual, thank you for your understanding.
    • March 24, 2020
      • Hello Everyone,
Due to our current situation, I will be contacting each of you either tonight, Tuesday, March 24 or Thursday, March 26 in the afternoon/evening.
In order to make this more manageable for me, I have simply divided the class into two alphabetical groups by last name. Tonight, I will be contacting the parents of my students whose last name begins with A-K.
Thursday, I will be contacting the parents of students whose last name begins with L-Z.
These conferences are meant to be a check in and can be as brief as necessary for your convenience.
Please continue on the next message.
    • March 24, 2020
      • I am planning on beginning at 4:00 this afternoon and working my way through the first half of my class in the same 15-minute intervals that regular conferencing would have in place.
If I do not reach you on my first attempt, I will try again until I reach you. My goal is to make verbal contact with all of you at least once a week.
The Remind app calling feature creates an "out-of-area" phone number when calling, so be aware that a number you do not recognize, might actually be my call to you.
If you have any questions, please contact me as soon as possible.
As always, thanks for your patience

      • Hello Everyone,
As I am sure many of you have noticed, today's math lesson is asking for a code. That code is: REJCI
Apparently the session expired after we shared the plans for this week.
I hope this message finds you and your family well. I will send out information later today about our whole-class Zoom meeting.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me and we can work together to figure them out!
        Thank you!

      • Hello,
I am excited to invite your student to a whole-class Zoom meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, March 31 at 6:30 pm.
I will send a link to a Zoom meeting in a Remind message tomorrow morning and it will also be available on my web-page.
This meeting is meant to be a way for students to come together and see their classmates and friends and actually visit with them as class to in-person as possible. This first one will simply be a check-in opportunity and we will not have any kind of major activity to do, I just want to get everyone together.
Please let me know if you have any questions!
        Mr Wheeler

      • Hello Everyone,
At the end of this message you will find the link to our Zoom class meeting scheduled for 6:30 this evening. In order to participate, you simply click the link which will open a Zoom meeting page. You may be asked to download the Zoom app if you are on a device.
Once you have clicked the link, it may ask for permission to use your device's audio and video. For this to work, you need to enable both settings. This will allow us to all see and hear each other.
If you have questions, please let me know!

As always, thank you for all you do!

      • Hello Everyone,
This is part 1 of two messages. I just wanted to check in with you all this week to make sure everything is going well with this weeks lessons. If you are having issues, please let me know so that we can address them to get them resolved.
A reminder that once your student finishes a Nearpod lesson and end the session, their answers come to me and are removed from the lesson. This means that if you log into the same lesson a second time, their answers will not still be there, and it will show on my end that the student has logged into the same lesson more than once.
    • April 7, 2020
      • Part 2
I am also able to see which activities they are completing and their responses. My report shows participation for each activity and the answers, so please encourage your students to attempt each part of the lesson and follow the directions as this helps me know what your student is understanding or struggling with within each lesson.
This week's Zoom classroom meeting will be on Thursday evening at 5:30. I will send the link to that meeting on Thursday morning.
I understand that not everyone will be able to attend, and as such, these are not mandatory, just a chance to get together.
    • April 9, 2020
      • Hello Everyone,
This is the first of hopefully only 3 messages I will be sending you today. This first message is a letter from Mr. Koch, the BMS band instructor. Please open and read the attached PDF document about Beginning Band. Also, could you please respond to this message if you child was in band this year as a 5th Grade student.
        Thank you!

      • Hello Everyone,
I hope you had a good Easter and that your family is all well. I will never be able to truly show my appreciation to how well you all have adapted to our new means of learning and I am continually amazed at the quality work that your students are submitting on these Nearpod lessons each week.
One small change to this weeks lesson plans was just forwarded to me and thus, I am forwarding it to you now. The code for the P.E. lesson is incorrect and does not work. The new code is: BXAUW
Thanks again for all you have done during this interesting time.

      • Hello Everyone,
This week there will be two opportunities for your student to join a Zoom Meeting. They are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday at 5:00 p.m. I will send the link to each meeting respectively on the day before the meeting.
It is important for your student to try to attend at least one of these meetings. Your student is not expected to attend both meetings, but may do so if they choose. These Zoom meetings register as a point of contact between your student and myself. This helps me maintain the relationship we had built prior to the closure.
        Thanks for all you do.

      • I hope this finds you well and that you and your family are staying safe during this interesting time.
I want to take a minute to stress the importance of your student logging in to the lessons and completing the work to the very best of his/her ability. This is our only means of instruction, so it is imperative that students are taking advantage of the opportunity.
If you are having any issues with the lessons, content, or access, please let me know as soon as possible as to continue to provide a way to help your student continue to grow during this difficult time.
        Thank you!

      • Hello Everyone,
I want to apologize for the lessons not being up on my teacher web-page this morning. I simply forgot to do upload them on Friday. They are there now for anyone to access.

I wanted to remind everyone about the Zoom meeting this afternoon at 3:00 with Mrs. Dick from Bluffs Middle School. This meeting is for your students to meet Mrs. Dick and ask any questions they may have about the transition. This will be the only Zoom class meeting this week and is intended for students.

If you have any questions after the video, please feel free to email me or send a Remind message and I will gladly forward them on to whoever can answer your question.

I recorded our Zoom meeting today and will send that out tomorrow for those students who could not make it today.

      • The recording from yesterday's class Zoom meeting can be found on my Teacher Webpage under the Announcements tab. Unfortunately, it is too large to send through Remind.
It is located under today's date, May 5, 2020 and as part of this exact announcement. If you have any additional questions, please email me, send me a Remind message, or contact Mrs. Dick directly by email at sdick@sbps.net.

      • Hello Everyone,
This is the first of two messages for today.
I wanted to inform you all that this is the last week for assignments. Our grading policy for the 4th quarter is based on participation and effort. If your student has participated and shown effort for at least 60% of the assignments we have offered in each subject, they will receive an "S" for all standards in each specific subject area.
If they have completed less than the 60%, they will receive an "I" for all standards.
I will finish this explanation in the next message.
    • May 12, 2020
      • All assignments are left open for 29 days from the day they are posted on the website and Remind. If your student needs to go back and complete some assignments to try to reach that 60% mark, I would encourage them to do so.
I am working this week on compiling all students completed/imcomplete assignments and will send individual messages to those students who are not at the 60% benchmark by Friday of this week. This will allow your student some of next week to "catch up" if they need to.
If you have any questions, please let me know!
        Thanks,
        Mr. Wheeler
