WNCC Teams Up with Westmoor
by Kelly Reisig
Each Tuesday and Thursday, 10-15 WNCC baseball players volunteer an hour of their time to mentor and work with K-4 students at Westmoor Elementary. "The coach, Mike Jones, mentioned an idea he had involving his baseball players. He mentioned they would be heading into their off-season soon and wondered if teachers could use any help meeting the needs of students. Mike also believed it would be equally beneficial for his players to become involved in working with young kids. Of course I responded with great excitement and later contacted him to begin setting up all of the details”, said Cindy Plummer, 2nd Grade Instructor at Westmoor.
The volunteers report to the classrooms and are involved in a wide range of activities with the students; flaschcards, learning games, listening to them read, assisting them on technology projects, etc. “Our Westmoor students look forward to the time with great excitement and our teachers with much appreciation. It’s a win, win situation for all involved” further explained Plummer.
