Our Media Center has a special responsibility to the students of Lincoln Heights. We help our students acquire skills for independent research, and assist them in developing discriminating skills when selecting materials to meet their educational, vocational, recreational, and personal goals in life. We supplement their formal educational processes as well as promote and foster a love of books and reading. To do this, we provide our students access to a variety of materials. As such, our materials and services are designed to support the learning experiences of the students. To ensure that our students have a positive learning experience, we provide a safe and welcoming environment for all our students.
In addition to print resources, the students have access to the internet, CD-ROM programs, and word processing capabilities. Our Media Center houses over 3,000 books containing a variety of fiction and non-fiction subjects.
In addition to our many books, our Media Center also houses twenty-seven computers. Our operating system is Windows XP. Some of our Microsoft XP programs include Word, PowerPoint, Paint, Excel and Access. In addition to our XP programs, we also have networked versions of Learning Tree's Ultimate Writing, Oregon Trail as well as Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing. Ultimate Writing is used in connection with our reading curriculum. Our third, fourth and fifth graders use Mavis Beacon to hone their typing skills.
We have a scanner for our use as well as an LCD projector to teach "awesome" technology lessons. Our building has six laptops designated for student use in the classroom. Lincoln Heights recently acquired two COW's (computers on wheels) equipped with internet access for use in the classrooms.
