SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT SHS

by Dr. Gary Reynolds

July 17, 2007

There are many paths students can take after high school, and the administration and staff at Scottsbluff High School want to do everything they can to prepare students for success upon graduation.

For students wanting to get a jump start on college courses, SHS offers five Advanced Placement (AP) classes.  These classes add rigor to a student’s high school coursework, and many universities grant credit to students who meet the criteria on AP Exams given in the spring.  This year SHS will offer AP Literature and Language, AP Statistics, AP U.S. History, AP Chemistry, and AP Calculus.  We are also working on adding a dual credit Physics course through Nebraska Wesleyan.

In addition to these advance classes, Scottsbluff High School is preparing to offer students opportunities to take courses through US Learning On-line.  These courses may be accessed from home with some courses available for dual credit through post-secondary institutions.
Students wanting to get ahead on the vocational track also have a variety of classes to choose from.  Since its inception, the ProStart Culinary program at SHS has prepared a significant number of students to enter into careers in the culinary field at a level which makes them attractive to employers and has allowed them to function at a high level in the industry.

We offer a large number of agriculture science courses as well.  These classes include Ag Science, Mechanics, Animal Science, Equine Science, Welding, Ag Metal Fabrication, Floral Design, Horticulture, Landscaping, Companion Animals, Drafting, and Woods.

We’ve also added the Construction Tech class back into course offerings.  This class is designed to provide students with the insight and basic skills used in several construction areas.

SHS continues to team up with WNCC to offer an Auto Tech class.  This class is taught at WNCC and students will receive dual credit upon completion.

Whatever the path a student chooses, planning for these courses should begin early.  Many classes have pre-requisites or recommended coursework to be completed prior to beginning specific course work in the student's area of interest.  It’s important that students and their parents meet with their counselors to find the right fit for them.

Scottsbluff High School continues to work with WNCC to develop additional opportunities for our students in the areas of technology, vocational and general education classes.
