CHANGES AT BLUFFS MIDDLE SCHOOL PRESENTED TO THE BOARD

by Mindy Burbach

June 13, 2007

Monday night the Scottsbluff Public School’s Board of Education got a preview of changes for Bluffs Middle School.
The major change for sixth, seventh and eighth graders next year will be the addition of Physical Education (PE) classes everyday.  Last year, middle school students participated in PE every other week, and alternated the time with another class.  By offering PE everyday, the students will be able to have a 22 minute homeroom/study hall when they are finished with lunch instead of a recess.
“The lunch-hour recess is when we had many of our discipline referrals.  By sending the students to their homeroom instead, we hope to strengthen the teacher/student relationship and cut down on disruptions to the learning environment,” commented Middle School Principal, Mike Mason.  “The students will also participate in more constructive and beneficial physical activity during PE than they would during the lunch-time recess.”
Another change for middle school students is where they wait and enter the building in the mornings.  Sixth grade students will now wait and enter the building on the north side of the annex near the practice football field. Seventh graders will wait at the center of the south side of the main building, and eighth graders will wait and enter on the west end of the south side of the main building.  Students are required to wait in their assigned areas upon arrival and enter their specific doors in order to create a more safe and orderly environment.
The cell phone policy for the middle school has also been modified similar to the policy at the high school.  Students are not to use cell phones or listening devices such as IPODS and MP3 players during the school day.
Guidelines have also been set on mandatory tutoring at the middle school.  If students have one F and are missing two or more assignments in core classes (reading, math, science, language arts, or social studies) then the student will be assigned to tutoring.  Tutoring will be offered before or after school in the library.  To be released from mandatory tutoring, the student must complete all of the missed work satisfactorily.
