SHS: Site Council

SHS Site Council Meeting Minutes

January 22, 2007 Meeting

January 21, 2007

Present: Galen Nighswonger, Chuck Elley, Laura Friedlein, John Gillan, Sally Guzman, Maria Hernandez, Scheryl Holscher, Kim Langdon, Liz Nagaki, Carla Stein, Peggy Wells, Robert Wells

The meeting opened with a report on the effectiveness of the random drug testing program at the high school. Galen Nighswonger and Chuck Elley report that the drug testing is a way for students to combat peer pressure to use drugs. Students are able to tell other students that they do not want to test positive for drugs and, consequently, do not use them. Students report that this situation is occurring.

Sheryl Holscher reported on the upcoming renovations to buildings in the district and the bond issue which will fund the renovations. The site council rec'd a handout with renovations listed by building. The high school will be building a new practice gym, weight room and wrestling room as well as renovating existing space in the school to relocate the front office and make better use of the lecture hall. The renovations at the high school will be funded by $3.3 million in district funds.

Galen Nighswonger reported on improved security at the high school. Cameras in the parking lots have been deterrents to crimes and have aided in apprehension of vandals and thieves. Renovations will allow for better administration monitoring of the main entrance to the high school. Other security concerns mentioned were lack of security at off campus sports practices; a need for greater student and teacher awareness of strangers in the building; and a need for students to understand the urgency of communicating information that could prevent violence in the school.

Galen Nighswonger led a discussion of core values members of the site council would like to see in the teachers at SHS. Some of the values mentioned were(in no particular order): integrity, compassion, interest in building relationships with students, passion for subject and knowledge of subject, flexibility/adaptibility, willingness to cooperate with other teachers and administration, and creativity. It is important to note that members of the site council believe many members of the SHS staff already exhibit these core values.

Meeting adjourned at 1:05 p.m. Next meeting will be Monday, February 12th.
