Our Alumni Really Shine
At Scottsbluff Public Schools, we have been blessed with intelligent, hard working and motivated achievers inside and outside of the classroom. We have some still learning throughout our school district and some who have graduated and continue to make us proud. Some of our students continue to shine in our community while others have taken their talents outside of the panhandle. No matter what the circumstances are, our students are shining bright and it speaks volumes about our education here at SBPS. We would like to recognize some current and former students on a job well done. 2011 graduate, Aubree Worden was named the 2010-11 Gatorade Nebraska Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year. Worden is the first Gatorade Nebraska Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year chosen from Scottsbluff High School. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the racecourse, distinguished Worden as Nebraska’s best high school girls cross country runner. After receiving this honor today she is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year award. This is just one of my honors for Worden. She has been honored with many awards and recognized for many different achievements. Worden announced, she will be headed to Florida State University next year on a track and cross country scholarship. 2011 graduates Sara Frederick, Madelin Parsley and Karin Shedd have all been named 2011 National Merit Scholarship Finalists. Only about 8,000 students from all over the country will be honored with a scholarship. And not only do they all excel in the classroom, they are all involved in sports and/or activities. 2011 graduate, Taylor Counter made school history in February, becoming the first female at Scottsbluff High to win a state championship. Counter won the 100 breaststroke event. 2010 SHS graduate, Teresa Scanlan has not only captured the hearts of Nebraska residents as Miss Nebraska but was also crowned in front of a national audience as the 2011 Miss America. She is the first Miss Nebraska to win the title. 1992 SHS graduate, Kevin Schaff has accomplished a great deal of success since he got his diploma here. After graduating, Schaff went on to get his BA in Marketing Communications from the University of Wyoming and since then has successfully lead many companies. Schaff is now the Founder & CEO of Thought Equity Mostion in Denver, Colorado. Before Thought Equity, he founded UPDATE Systems, Inc., an Internet e-communication company and was the President of Wind River Communications Inc., a nationally competitive design and internet development firm. 1996 Scottsbluff High School graduate, Justin Shaddick has stayed around the Panhandle since graduating. After graduating, Shaddick attended Black Hills State University with a Business Administration degree. But later realized, teaching was a possibility so he went back to school at Chadron State College and got hos Business Education and School Administration degree. Before starting at Scottsbluff Public Schools, Shaddick work at ESU 13 as a math and social studies teacher at the Juvenile Detention Center for two years. Now, Shaddick is a Business and Marketing Instructor at SHS. Winning Cross Country coach and 1988 SHS graduate, Tanya Vaughn didn't take too much of a break from the valley. Shortly after graduating, Vaughn attended Midland Lutheran College. After graduating college, Vaughn headed to Texas and taught at Cavazos Junior High School in Lubbock, Texas for two years. Eventually, she made her way back to her hometown of Scottsbluff, where she is a math teacher at SHS. In addition to her talents inside the classroom, Vaughn is also a Track and Field and Cross Country coach at SHS. Since becoming a coach, she has lead three cross country teams to state titles and coached, Aubree Worden to three individual state titles as well. 1997 SHS graduate, Scott Dishong has had a very successful journey since graduating from SHS. After graduating from SHS, Dishong attended UNL and graduated in 2002. He put his DECA marketing skills to the test and began as a Statewide Promotions Manager for the Nebraska Lottery in 2004. Dishong, has since relocated to Colorado, where he is the Executive Director for the American Cancer Society. We would certainly enjoy hearing from our alumni and would love to hear about the great things you are achieving. Feel free to email us at info@sbps.net. Please be sure to include your name along with the year you graduated. We look forward to hearing from you!
